On March 2, 2013, a successful 12th Annual Glades REACH Health Fair was held at the C.L. Brumback Health Center in Belle Glade, FL. The Glades REACH fair began in an effort to address healthcare disparities and access in several of our local, rural, underserved communities surrounding Lake Okeechobee. This event addressed health issues for hundreds of residents covering the cities of Belle Glade, Pahokee, South Bay, Canal Point, and unincorporated areas west of 20 mile bend.
Numerous service providers from the PBC Department of Health, the PBC Health Care District and Lakeside Medical Center, as well as medical, nursing and other HPD students and faculty from Nova Southeastern University, Florida Atlantic University and South University voluntarily offered their assistance to our neediest residents. A variety of medical services were offered to include adult and pediatric medical exams, a women’s health clinic with breast education and local mammogram referrals built in, optometric screenings, dental services, bone density screenings, diabetes screenings, geriatric care, occupational and physical therapy, HIV education/testing, immunizations, STD testing and more. The dental department was very thankful to have supplemental supplies that came in very handy, donated by the Henry Schein Foundation.
Over 400 individuals attended our 2013 REACH health fair to access quality health care and education at no cost, the majority of which do not have health insurance and are limited in the kinds of health related services at their disposal. Many attendees were underserved minority, migrant, seasonal farm workers and local Black, Haitian and Hispanic families with little or no access to primary healthcare.
In addition, many attendees were individuals and families dealing with language barriers and other kinds of disparities typical of the rural underserved population. Volunteer medical interpreters, trained through the Glades Initiative, Inc., were available throughout the day to assist these individuals.
Event organizers would like to thank the following supporters:
