1st dental mission Haiti Foundation Against Poverty, Port-au-Prince

The organization I am volunteering for is the Haiti Foundation Against Poverty. They are active in Port-au-Prince with all kinds of programs working with 2 schools, an orphanage, a medical clinic, food foundations and child sponsorships. Education, child care and medical assistance are some of the services they provide amongst others. The mission teams they send have different goals and I am proud to say that I participated in their first dental mission.

Our days would start by visiting the School of Hope in LesBous until noon and then continue back in the Hope House. Every morning we treated the school children and staff members. Eventually we finished seeing over 200 students by the end of the week and we were able to see some family members, who mostly lived in tent cities. In the afternoon, we saw people in the Hope House including orphans, staff members and their families. During this mission we were able to treat over 450 Haitians in total.

We mainly provided dental exams, varnish, education and many extractions. Since this was the first dental trip for the organization, we started with no other supplies than the donated ones. We are very thankful to the Henry Schein Cares Foundation for providing us health kits with all kinds of medical supplies. Without their generosity we would not have been able to treat this poor and underserved population. Moreover, we were able to lay a good foundation for future dental missions. In that way the medical health can be maintained and infections and diseases can be prevented because of regular check-ups.

The Haiti Foundation Against Poverty and I are grateful for the Henry Schein Cares Foundation’s donation making this ‘Mission Possible’. Thank you very much!
