On Saturday, October 13, 2013, El Rio joined the Binational Health Week (BHW) to provide free dental services and referrals for children in the Tucson community. As a community based dental clinic, one of our primary goals is to provide services to those with the greatest need. This event allowed three dentists, one hygienist, seven dental assistants and one volunteer, from the Masters in Public Health program at the University of Arizona, to work in the community and provide dental services, screenings and instruction to youth in the community.
The health fair was hosted at the El Pueblo Community Recreation Center. El Rio dentists provided 41 children with dental screenings and fluoride treatment as well as information for their parents about proper oral care and dental hygiene. In addition to providing services, we were also able to establish a dental home for many of the children who had not previously visited the dentist.
While not all children in attendance of the health fair were seen by the dentist, all received oral health kits, which were donated by the Henry Schein Cares Foundation. Without this generous donation, many children would still be lacking basic dental care items. The toothbrushes and toothpaste will provide the children an opportunity to care for their oral health and create positive health changes and outcomes within their families.
This was a very successful event that allowed the El Rio dental department to work in the community and serve families with limited resources and it would not have been possible without the donation we received. The additional oral health kits are given to children during weekly fluoride varnish treatment programs offered at local El Rio pediatric clinics and other health outreach events.
Thank you to Henry Schein.
