With the help of Shoulder to Shoulder, our team traveled to a very remote village in Honduras to provide free medical care on our biannual brigade called Friends of Ocote Paulino last fall. For this trip, our team consisted of four physicians, two physician assistants, a microbiologist, a rural community development specialist and several translators. Since we have been working in this community for several years, we have formed some great relationships with the people. It is very gratifying to witness significant improvements in their overall health.
Thanks to the generous donations we received from the Henry Schein Cares Foundation, we were able to care for over 350 patients. In order to help as many people as we could, we examined all children, and provided exams to adults and any other necessary treatments for conditions such as asthma, hypertension, pneumonia, parasites, trauma and gastritis. With supplies donated from Henry Schein, we were also able to complete urine and glucose testing to help identify any possible cases of diabetes.
We also provided toothbrushes, toothpaste and dental floss to many people who otherwise would have had none, with the hopes of preventing any future tooth decay. The children were taught the proper way to brush, floss their teeth, and were then given a fluoride treatment. A dentist even did extractions when necessary. Our team also distributed reading glasses and school supplies and uniforms.
We are always touched by the gratitude expressed by the people we serve. It is so humbling to see a child get excited to receive a gift of a toothbrush and toothpaste. We are truly appreciative for all the supplies we received from Henry Schein. We always strive to provide the best care possible and try to ensure that every donation is used in the very best way possible.
