My journey started with a mobile dental unit, chair, an air compressor, and duffle bags full of supplies from Henry Schein with the goal of placing them in the newly dedicated Kristina Health Center, built by Julius Auchon and the Auchon Uganda Childrens Fund (AUCF), in Awake, N. Uganda. Julius’ journey from child soldier, to Olympic runner, to fulfilling his dream of building a medical clinic for his village is documented in an article in Runners World Magazine Jan. 2012 and on the AUCF website.
After landing in Ethiopia, a side trip to do Polio vaccinations with Rotary International, I quickly realized my equipment and supplies were going to be used first at multiple organizations before reaching Kristina Health Center. The first organization was AWSAD the only safe house for gender based violence in the country of Ethiopia. The children and the mothers themselves were very appreciative of the oral health kits.
My next stop was an orphanage in Lira, N. Uganda where Julius Auchon takes care of a group of orphans he found laying under a bus on one of his trips home. The supplies donated by Henry Schein will go a long way in providing for their future oral health needs. My next stop was at the Kristina Health Center in Awake, Otuke District, N. Uganda. After setting up the dental clinic, some fellow travelers used the donated toothbrushes to teach oral hygiene instruction to people at the clinic, while I used the other supplies in treating the people who had never seen a dentist. I can’t thank Henry Schein enough for everything they donated to make this trip a success!
